New Delhi-based Raghu Rai seldom feels the need to venture beyond his country’s borders in search of dynamic imagery. The 2018 Lucie Awards Achievement in Photojournalism recipient finds his native India an endless source of visual and spiritual inspiration. Rai was born in 1942 in the village of Jhang in Punjab, British India, which, after the contentious division of the countries in the region, is now in Pakistan. One of four children, he initially followed his father’s wishes and qualified as a civil engineer. His “discovery” of photography however at the age of 23 would take him on a very different journey.
