Bahman P. Tabaei Single Image Winner MUSIC/SPORTS/DANCE

Photography gives me a chance to explore everyday life from new perspectives. It is an opportunity to break away from the familiar into different paths of artistic expression. This image was made during a live dance performance at the annual Battery Dance Festival in New York City. I employed a low-key exposure to create dark tones and capture the interaction between patterns of light and shadow, delicately illuminating the movement and rhythm of the dancers. My intention was to reveal the spirit of dance as a dramatic visual effect and a powerful process of aesthetic expression and communication of emotions.
